Wars such as those in Iraq and Afghanistan are wrapped up in vast amounts of rhetoric and propaganda. George Bush talks of freedom and democracy, but there is nothing free about a Western, Christian superpower changing the government of Asian countries at will - remember it was the United States that put Saddam Hussain in power!
Let’s ask ourselves, would we want a large country to bomb our cities, displace all our institutions and political structures, impose their own governments and patrol our streets with military? No, certainly not. Of course, Saddam Hussain was an awful leader, a tyrant of the highest magnitude, but isn’t it a co-incidence that this displaced tyrant rules over a land with vast oil supplies?
Whatever the motives of Iraq, this is Imperialism at work, and the recent UK General Election showed there was strong opposition to Tony Blair’s decision to support the US. We must ensure that Iraq is the last war of its kind - which means opposing any action on the likes of Iran or North Korea.
Violence breeds violence. If we continue the “War on Terror” we simply breed more extremists who find their evil plans to harm the innocent people of the New Yorks, Madrids and now London. War is not glamorous, it’s the biggest tragedy of mankind, Let’s remember that.
